How could you live without one???!!!![]()
I have been using my Harmony since Christmas. As an IT guy I was especially impressed with the configuration process. I could have given this thing to my daughter to setup and she would have been done in less than 30 minutes. It's easy to setup, easy to use, and just plain cool!
One thing I was impressed with was it's ability to control our 360. We have my sons account setup to be the default Xbox account, so when I want to play something, I can turn it on, log him off, and log myself on without even picking up a controller. I have had no issues with it at this point. I like the fact that the battery is a drop in and easily replaceable... we'll see how long it will last with being recharged a few times a week, but ultimatly it won't be a big deal since the batteries are cheep.
Get one!
Poor reliability!![]()
I have owned this remote for slightly more than one year. The first unit failed within a few months and after a lot of aggravation I received a replacement. After using this replacement for approximately 8 months it's failed too. The remote worked well initially but the quality control and product durabilty are questionable at best. This remote has not seen any hard use nor has it ever been dropped yet it has failed again just outside of the warranty period. If you must have this item buy an extended warranty as you're going to need it.
a lifesaver! well worth the money![]()
Getting this remote has made it a lot easier to use our home theater system. The system has many different components - receiver, DVD player, TV, cable box/DVR, ipod & dock, each with separate remotes. Watching TV or switching from cable TV to DVD required pushing buttons on 3 different remotes, in a particular order. Not too hard for me, but nearly impossible for my parents (when they visited, I had to write down instructions on what buttons to push to watch a DVD - and even then, they'd call me at work for "support").
The Logitech Harmony ended these frustrations. Now, there's ONE remote, and you touch ONE button to watch TV or switch to DVD. The remote knows what combination of commands to send to each device and in what order.
How does it work? When you first get the Logitech Harmony, you install software on your computer. You tell the software the brand and model number of each component in your home theater system. The software constantly updates from Logitech's online database of components, so you never have to worry that your components won't be supported by the Harmony remote.
Once the software knows each of your components, you define "activities," such as "watch TV" or "listen to iPod" or whatever. This is very easy - just tell it which of your components are used for each activity.
Finally, connect the Harmony remote to your computer via the supplied cable (which is a standard USB cable, not proprietary). The software loads the relevant information onto your remote, and you're done. The whole setup process takes 15 minutes - and most of that time is just looking up the model names and numbers of your components.
Now your remote is ready. Just press "watch TV" and it will turn on your receiver, your cable box, and your TV. Press "watch DVD" and it will turn off your cable box, turn on your DVD player, and change the receiver from cable TV to DVD.
The Harmony even controls my iPod, when docked in my remote-capable Apple iPod dock. (Only for next track, previous track, stop, pause, play, and volume, just like the typical Apple iPod remote.)
Now when my parents visit, they can entertain themselves with DVDs or TV while I'm working, and they never need "tech support" with the home theater system. Just their computer, but that's another story.
In sum, the Logitech Harmony is a well-designed and very easy to use product, and I think very well worth the money.
